For over 200 years women from Maine and Eastern Canada made extremely warm wool mittens. By mastering the technique of knitting with two strands of yarn they produced a thick, dense layer of wool that could resist wind and snow. Valued for durability and warmth without sacrificing mobility, double knit mittens were preferred by hunters, fishermen and loggers. Now they are extremely hard to find, as younger generations have turned to synthetic products made overseas; products that lack the warmth and beauty of wool.
My hand knit mittens are a revival of this North American tradition that has protected hard working hands for generations. The double knit technique creates simple geometric patterns while also doubling the thickness of the fabric. Natural oils in the wool repel dampness and long cuffs protect wrists. These mittens are made of all natural wool blended with mohair for durability and softness. Over time they will become softer and warmer as they settle to fit the contours of your hands.
